Welcome

Welcome to the Child Language Lab! We’re so excited to have you as a part of our team. We’ve created this guide to help you learn how we do things and get setup with the resources you’ll need.

How to use this guide

This guide was created as the content for our new lab members. Each section will provide you with summarize information and direct you to where you can find out more. You should read each section and explore the linked pages it recommends. If you have any questions, send them to Katie at kschuler@sas.upenn.edu.

The lab handbook

If you haven’t already, you should start by reading our lab handbook. This is where we articulate who we are and how we do things. Pay special attention to the section on our values, which will help you understand what is important to us and what it is like to work here.

Prerequisites

In order to work in the lab, there are a few things you’ll need to make sure you’ve read or have access to. All of this information is available in the lab handbook.

  • Internal systems - Make sure you are able to access the lab’s internal systems, outlined in the lab handbook.

  • Events and routines - Make sure you’ve familiarized yourself with the lab’s routines and the events we attend.

  • Expectations - Make sure you know what is expected of you as a member of the lab.

Our wiki and task list

Besides the lab handbook, the two most important things to familiarize yourself with are the lab wiki and the lab task lists. If you are reading this, you’ve already discovered the Child Language Lab Wiki. It is our central hub for lab-internal information, like the handbook and how-to guides. If you are wondering how to do something, the wiki can probably tell you!

We use todoist to manage our tasks. If you haven’t already received an invitation to join our lab todoist, email Katie to request one now.

Everyone in the lab has access to the following 3 lists:

  • Lab-wide Projects A list of the projects we are working on that are not research (like our wiki or reorganizing the lab).

  • Bug Tracker - The bug tracker list is where we keep track of bugs in our code or how we do things in the lab. Anyone (including undergrads!!) can and should add bugs, big and small, to this list.

  • ChildLangLab Submit! - is a list to keep track of conferences, fellowships, and grants lab members might want to submit to.

Research assistants also have access to :

  • RA To Do - This is the to-do list for research assistants. The items on this list are housekeeping things we need to do on a regular basis and/or things that aren’t tied to a particular project. Weekly and Monthly tasks are not assigned to a particular RA. Rather, whoever gets to these items first should check them off.

  • Voicemail Log - where we keep track of who has called and whether we’ve called them back.

Programmers also have access to:

  • Experiment Library - the task list for the Experiment Library project.
